What is a hip protector?

HipP_ImageA hip protector is a specialized form of pants or underwear containing pads (either hard or soft) along the outside of each hip/leg, designed to prevent hip fractures following a fall. They are most commonly used in elderly individuals who have a high risk of falls and hip fractures. There are a variety of different styles (and companies) which supply these products – and the quality and effectiveness of these products varies.

How do you properly fit a hip protector?

Each company will have guidelines on how to properly size and fit their different models of hip protectors on their company website. For example:

  • Guidelines for how to choose and fit HipSaver products
  • Guidelines for how to choose and fit SAFEHIP® products
