Super Program Helps Grandparents and Grandchildren Keep Homes Safe

comic-icon1The Safety Superheroes Program is an intergenerational fall prevention program that invites children to learn about fall prevention and home safety through fun, interactive games, reading activities and in-school presentations.

Created through partnership between Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health, the Safety Superheroes Program encourages children to make their homes safer for their grandparents by teaching them about hazards, like bath mats and electrical cords, that can lead to falls.

The program’s multimedia approach means that learners of all varieties can find a way of accessing the important, fall-prevention materials. Students interested in story, for instance, can read a picture-book, Safety Superheroes: Preventing Grandparents from Falling, which is now available in French, English and Chinese. Others may find the online Safety Superhero Challenge, an interactive game, to be a fun and engaging way of learning about fall prevention.

The program even offers schools the opportunity to invite trained facilitators to lead in-class workshops in fall prevention. Children who complete the program earn a certificate and the title of “Safety Superhero.”
